Wart and Mole Removal

Most people at some point in their life will experience a wart, a mole or both. The two have something in common, they are unsightly and embarrassing. In some cases, a wart can also be painful, especially when it is on the feet. In order to use the best method for removal it is important to know exactly what you are dealing with.

Warts

Warts come in several sizes and types are caused by a viral infection, most commonly the human papillomavirus (HPV), and are contagious. Warts are classified into these main types:

• Common- Raised rough edges found on hands and knees

• Flat Wart- Tan or discolored skin, most commonly found around the face, neck, hands or feet

• Filiform- Thread like wart commonly found around the face and on the eyelid

• Plantar Wart- Relatively flat and often painful wart found on the bottom of the feet

• Genital Wart- Often sexually transmitted, a wart on the genitalia

Most warts are easily removed with over the counter medications such as products containing salicylic acid. Common products are pads treated with the acid compound or a liquid form of the acid that you apply daily. In the case of genital warts, you should see a physician to discuss the possibility of having them frozen off; acid based treatments are not recommended for such a sensitive area of the body.

Moles

Like warts, most people will have at least one mole in their lifetime, though darker skinned people are less prone to them. A mole is a lesion on the skin that is colored by the pigment known as melanin. There are many different types of moles, below is a sample list:

• Giant Hairy Nevus- These are large colored moles that can have hair sprouting from them, these are most concerning because they can melanoma can appear in them.

• Junctional Nevus- Generally flat and black or brown in color.

• Compound Nevus- Slightly raised and brown to black in color, generally considered beauty marks

• Mongolian Spot- Deep colored bluish spot, found on back of Asian babies.

Moles can be removed by a physician in many ways. If the mole is suspected of carrying melanoma, it will first need to be biopsied. The procedure for removal in a case like this will be more intensive. One of three processes can remove moles.

1) Excisional Biopsy- A procedure that attempts to remove the entire mole and a small amount of peripheral tissue.

2) Laser- Removing a mole with a laser is effective on shallow moles. Should the mole be a deep tissue variety a laser will not be able to go deep enough to get it all.

3) Electrocautery- Primarily used for the removal of skin tags this is the process of using electricity to destroy the tissue.
