Red Mole On Skin

Moles are a part of life for the majority of humans on the planet. Most people will develop one by the time they are twenty years old. Moles, for the most part are harmless growths colored by a high concentration of skin pigment known as melanin. Generally, they will range in color from skin tones to black.

A red mole on the skin is not necessarily cause for concern, if the mole has always been red and has not changed in size, symmetry or discomfort then it is likely normal and nothing to be concerned with.

Changes in Moles

Most people have developed moles early in life; some babies are even born with them. As stated before they are generally not a cause for alarm, however if you have noticed changes it is time to get them looked at.

Causes for concern:

• Asymmetry- If the symmetry of a mole is off the mole could be cause for concern. Look at the mole and compare it in halves, if one side is drastically different from the other it is asymmetrical and could be cancerous.

• Boarder- If the edge of a mole becomes jagged it should be seen by a physician.

• Color- When a mole changes in color say from skin tones to red or has a number of different colors within it, you should see a doctor.

• Diameter- A mole should not be larger than the eraser on a pencil, if you notice one growing rapidly it is time to get it looked at.

Red Moles

Many times a cherry angioma will be mistaken for a red mole. These can occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the torso. A cherry angioma is a cluster of dilated capillaries close to the skin surface; they are normally painless but may bleed profusely when injured. They are harmless but many people want them removed for cosmetic reasons. A trained professional should do this, as these lesions tend to bleed heavily.

Most moles regardless of their color are benign, whether they are red, black, brown or flesh tone. The time to be concerned is if the mole has recently changed from one color to another. In conclusion, a red mole on the skin should be checked the same as any other mole would be.
